Streamline your CNC with a Mitsubishi M80 Series control platform
CNC routers offer craftsmen tremendous benefits in the areas of efficiency and precision, but those advantages only go as far as your equipment and your knowledge of it will allow. Despite its contributions to performance and production, a CNC router is still a highly technical piece of information that can be prone to a considerable learning curve.
Thankfully, the usability of CNC routers is streamlined and simplified through the use of Mitsubishis M80 Series control platform. Here are several key ways an M80 control can optimize your CNC work.
Note: The M80 Series is part of Mitsubishis greater M8 Series that includes several other controls. This piece will focus on the M80 Series controller and its auxiliary and peripheral devices.
User-friendly touchscreen interface
In the context of operation, the M80 control platform is mounted directly to the back of the CNC machines display and features an intuitive touchscreen. This interface is easy to use and offers functionality similar to what many of us have come to expect from smartphones and tablets.
The touchscreen makes it easy to scroll through softkeys and part programs, relocate popup windows, zoom in and out of part renderings, and more. The M80 also offers the option to turn off touchscreen functionality if hard keys are more your speed.
Easy-access memory ports
The M80 platform also has an SD card and USB ports directly on the front of the controller, making it easier to instantly download part programs and parameters to the machine. This also provides the option to drip-feed or network control to the server in order to load programs.
Fiber-optic servo communication
Another key component of the Mitsubishi M80 Series control is fiber-optic communication to all servo amplifiers and motors all of which are category 3 safety rated.
The motors are all high-speed, running at 3,000, 4,000, or 5,000 RPM. There is also an encased glass encoder mounted to the motor a 1 million pulse-per-revolution absolute encoder (4 million or 16 million pulses per revolution encoders are also available).
All servo amplifiers are intelligent servos, meaning the control is constantly relaying commands to the servo amplifiers telling them where and how to move. The servo amplifiers then position themselves and send confirmation to the control that they’ve done their job and that its time to move on to the next step.
Absolute positioning
There are many custom parts available for the M80, including a keyboard, machine operators panel, and batteries for amplifiers to achieve absolute positioning.
Absolute positioning ensures that when you power off your machine at the end of the day and power it back on in the morning, the amplifiers and control will know and pick up exactly where you left off with no home routine required.
Within the M80 control, you can set up all your tool offsets either for all tools in your magazine or on an individual basis.
Bidirectional pitch error compensation
The Mitsubishi M80 Series control platform also offers bidirectional pitch error compensation, meaning it can compensate for any discrepancies within the ball screws on the machine by pitch error comping in both directions.
